I have been on a personal journey with my martial arts since 1986. During that time, I have learned many truths, and untruths. This history of the martial arts is often obscured, possibly deliberately. In telling the tale, many misconceptions can arise. One question I have confronted is obligation. Obligation to your art, and importantly, your sensei. If your learning is restricted and questions unanswered, do you seek guidance elsewhere? Do you learn your lessons and crave more, or create that foundation after much practice? That leads to questioning your social interactions for developing your honor. When you develop your sense of honor, you find your courage. I had to find my courage in my journey to learn more rather be told what to be expected. It lead me to train in other arts, have the confidence to ask questions and to learn, to grow. As martial artists, we train for combat, to fight to win. But in our minds, we need to train for peace. My training is never complete. So I summoned the courage to learn more beyond my original karateka (Isshinryu) studies. These journeys have taken me to many countries outside of the United States where I embraced other like minded warriors. My most recent passion, Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu, has overwhelmed me with inspiration and understanding. How to gently escalate a situation while retaining honor. How to defend oneself beyond the scope of karate. How to move, flow, and importantly, relax. This scroll entails a derivation from those studies. Always impressed with aikido, this beautiful work of art is a kind reminder of my journey, and what makes the martial arts a way of life. Domo arigato.
